Movies we watched in March

It's April! March was a month that was quite different. We went to the UK (Sheffield and Liverpool), but also the Corona virus caused a lot measurements being taken and events to be cancelled. So we watched a lot of movies at home, since we were at home more than usual.. Let's see what we did with all this time at home! 


Carola

Mandy

Year: 2018

Genre: Action, horror

Remark: This one of the movies we bought during the holiday in the UK! And the first one to watch at home.  Mandy is about Red and, yes, Mandy. They live together in the forest. But their peaceful lives come to and end when a hippie cult crosses their path. 

Teddy Bear (10 Timer Til Paradis)

Remark: Teddy Bear follows Dennis, 38-year-old bodybuilder who lives with his mother and is very shy. But he would love to have a relationship. One day he goes to Thailand to search for love.

Men in Black: International

Year: 2019

Genre: Action, Adventure

Remark: I wanted to watch this one in the cinema last year, but eventually didn't see it. (There's so much I want to see in the cinema!). I just watched it on a Friday night now on Netflix. It was nice & entertaining.

Remark: I saw this one getting mentioned on Instagram a lot. Adam Sandler in a serious role. And most people were really enthusiastic. I already love Adam Sandler movies. I'm not the biggest comedy movies fan, but I do own quite a lot of Adam Sandler movies. so I knew I had to see this one. Uncut Gems is a movie about a jeweler (Adam Sandler) who's in trouble. He needs money soon and is determined to get it. It's just not that easy.. 

Wild at Heart

Remark: I really love watching David Lynch movies. One of my favorites is Eraserhead. This month, I watched a David Lynch movie I hadn't seen before: Wild at Heart! It stars Nicolas Cage, Laura Dern, Willem Dafoe and others in great roles! The story is about Sailor and Lulu (Nicolas and Laura) who are on the run from Lulu's mom, who's hiring people to kill Sailor. 

I loved this movie! Nicolas and Laura are great (and so young!) and the role of Willem Dafoe was also very impressive! 

New York, New York

Remark: After watching Wild At Heart at a movie marathon saturday, I decided I needed a proper follow up for a David Lynch movie. So I decided to go looking for a Martic Scorcese movie I hadn't seen yet. And I found the DVD of New York New York in my collection. A movie starring Robert De Niro and Liza Minnelli as a young couple trying to make it in music. 

The Lady in the Van

Remark: The is one of the movies I bought in Liverpool. It's about woman who lives in her van. She moves her van from street to street until one day she forms a bond with a man in the neighborhood and she can temporarily park her van on his driveway. she stays for 15 years. 

Animal Farm

Remark: I read George Orwell's book years ago and I also saw the movie once before. I was looking for the DVD for a while already and found this, surprise, also during our trip to the UK. Animal Farm is about the animals on a farm who revolt against the humans. They want to be free. But along the way, they slide into more tyranny themselves too. 

Incident in a Ghostland

Remark: The whole movie I thought that one of the actresses really looked like Allison from Teen Wolf, and it turned out I was right haha. But somehow, while watching the movie I felt like it couldn't be true. (I thought the movie was older). 

In Incident in a Ghostland, a mother of inherits a house. On their first night there, there are murderous intruders and she fights for her childrens lives. Years later, the daughters reunite at the house and things get really strange.

45 Years

Year: 2015

Genre: Drama, romance

Remark: This a movie about a couple that's almost married for 45 years.  They are preparing their anniversary, but meanwhile something happens that will change their bound for life. 

What Ever Happed to Baby Jane?

Year: 1962

Genre: Drama, Thriller

Remark: Baby Jane is a former child star. She loved the attention and the success. But somewhere along the way, her sister Blanche got more successful. More popular. And that's hard for Baby Jane. But then, there's a car accident. This leaves Blanche in a wheelchair. years later, Baby Jane and Blanche live together and Blanche is completely dependent of Baby Jane. Only Baby Jane, can't put away her jealousy and  sabotages Blanche in every way she can. 

Thirst (Bakjwi)

Year: 2009

Genre: Drama, Horror

Remark: A South-Korean horror movie, starring one of the actors I also saw in the movie Parasite. Thirst about a priest who becomes a vampire after a failed experiment. Now he is forced to live in a different way. The movie is loosely based on the novel Thérèse Raquin by Émile Zola.

Mary Queen of Scots

Year: 2018

Genre: Drama, history

Remark: A movie about the life of Mary, Queen of Scots when she arrives back in Scotland from France. I really wanted to see this movie because I loved the series Reign so much. And I have to say: I really liked the movie too. Margot Robbie is a great Queen Elizabeth I. However, I do still prefer reign, one of my all time favorite series!  

Welcome to Marwen

Year: 2018

Remark: Mark Hogancamp was the victim of a violent attack. Ever since he's developing a miniature village in World War II called Marwen to help him through the recovery process. 

 

As soon I saw the trailer a while ago, I was intrigued. I saw Steve Carell as a miniature figurine, in a World War II village. I didn't know exactly what the movie was about, but added it to my watch list. In Sheffield, I bumped in to the movie and bought it. Gad I got to watch it now!  

The Girl on the Train

Remark: This is quite another story. I bought this DVD, yes, in Liverpool. I was looking forward to see the movie, since I had seen the trailer a few years ago in the cinema (but never managed to see the movie). At home, I found out I bought the wrong one! I bought the 2014 movie, the Girl on the Train. But luckily for me haha, in the shop they put the wrong disc in it: The 2016 movie!  

Hitchcock Truffaut

Remark: I really love Hitchock movies! So I was definitely excited to see this documentary where filmmakers discuss the influence of Francois Truffaut's book Cinema According to Hitchcock. 

Jumbo

Year: 2020

Remark: I watched this movie on Vitamine Cineville, an initiative by Cineville because the cinemas are closed. I love the initiative! Jumbo is a movie about Jeanne, who works in a theme park. She's facinated by all the carousels there. But when the themepark buys a new one, Jumbo, her fascination goes even further. I though this was an interesting movie, I like movies with a different angle and I haven't seen a movie like this. 

Maniac

Remark: Ever since we met Elijah Wood at Comic Con Los Angeles, I wanted to watch more of his (horror) movies. And in Liverpool & Sheffield I finally managed to buy some! It's a remake of 1980 movie Maniac! 

Come to Daddy

Remark: I had never heard of this movie before when I bumped into it in the HMV. I thought it was interesting but didn't buy it. In the next HMV, I saw this movie again. And again. Until our last visit at HMV Liverpool. I decided I just needed to buy it. It's a movie starring Elijah Wood about a guy who travels to his father to reconnect with him. 

Willard & Ben

Year: 1971 & 1972

Genre: Horror

Remark: In Willard, a guy (named Willard) is having a hard times socially. he doesn't have any friends, he doesn't have a good connection with his mom and the same goes for his work. His only friends become a couple of rats that he finds in his home. Forming more and more an unusual connection to these rats, Willard uses them for his own purposes. The movie Ben is the sequel to Willard. 

Mom and Dad

Genre: Horror, comedy

Remark: Mom and Dad was on my to watchlist already for a while. And then I found the DVD in Sheffield! When I came home I didn't wait too long  to watch it. Mom and Dad is a movie where all parents turn violent on their kids suddenly. A teenage girl and her younger brother are trying to survive their parents.. 

Scarecrow

Year: 1973

Remark:  A great movie starring Al Pacino and Gene Hackman! A road movie about 2 guys who travel from California to Pittsburgh to start a company. 

Bonnie and Clyde

Year: 1967

Genre: Action, crime

Remark: I "knew" the story of the famous Bonny & Clyde: a couple on the run stealing cars & robbing banks. But I actually had never seen this movie. So it was great to see this one! I really liked it, but it was still somehow different than what I had imagined. Definitely loved seeing the movie!

Remark: As a big Tarantino fan, I was very happy to this DVD in a shop in Liverpool! I knew instantly I wanted to buy this movie. I have seen every movie of Quentin Tarantino. Most of them more than once. A documentary about his first 8 movies, was definitely something I wanted to see. And it was great to hear the actors opinion about the movies, the filming and Quentin Tarantino. The only thing I really missed.. AN interview with the man himself! 

A League of Their Own

Remark: A movie that I had seen before and really love. A League of Their Own shows the first female professional baseball league. It has a great cast with for example Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Lori Petty and Madonna. At Comic Con Liverpool, we met Lori Petty and after that I really wanted to see this movie again. I really enjoyed watching it! 

Les Misérables

Remark: Another movie that I watched on Vitamine Cineville! When I still could go to the cinema, I saw the trailer for this movie and I was determined to see it in the cinema (little did I know). 

Luckily, now it's available at Vitamine Cineville and I still got the chance to watch it! 

For Sama

Remark: I also watched For Sama on Vitamine Cineville. It's a documentary about war. Waad Al-Kateab's is a journalist and made this documentary Syrian Civil War. Her husband is a doctor in Aleppo. Together they have a daughter: Sama. 

Liv

Like Carola mentioned we are at home a lot, so there is enough time to watch a lot of movies. Although that is true, I also watched a lot of series. So my list isn't quite that extensive as Carola's list, but here we go!

Hustlers

Remark: Since Amazon set up camp in The Netherlands (and I buy a lot at Amazon) I decided to sign up for Amazon Prime. When I opened the app, this was the first movie that popped up. I had seen the trailer in the cinema, so I decided to give it a try. It's inspired by a true story.

Booksmart

Remark: Also watched this one at Amazon Prime. This movie revolves around Amy And Molly, best friends and both very smart. On the eve of their graduation, they come to realize that they spent too much time studying and never ever really lived. So they decide to party hard on their last evening before graduation.

Remark: One of the many DVDs I bought over the last month. Lately I am really into (re)watching 80s movies and this one stars two of my favorites Tom Hanks and Dan Aykroyd. What is not to like!

Remark: I had been searching for this one for a long time and I finally found during our UK trip. It had been a long time since I watched it and I still love it!

Ready or Not

Remark: I rented this one and I loved it! It's a bit bizarre at some points, but that makes it all the more fun. When a girl marries into an eccentric rich family, she has no idea that her wedding night is gonna be hell!

Remark: I love Adam Sandler as a comedian and especially in movies like "The Wedding Singer", "Happy Gilmore" and "The Waterboy". When I saw the trailer for this one on Netflix, I put it on my watch list immediately. I was curious to see Sandler in a serious role and he knocked it out of the park. 

Angel has Fallen

Remark: Sometimes you just need to watch a movie like this. The story is quite predictable, because I have watched the other movies in this series. But it gets the job done, 2 hours of pure entertainment. Loved Nick Nolte!
