Series talk: Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency

Recently I've started (and finished) watching Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. I watched the series on Netflix after hearing a lot of good things about it. I heard the plot was very surprising and you really have to keep your eyes open. So I decided to give it a go and see if it's something for me. Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency actually starts with Todd Brotzam (Elijah Wood), a bellboy. He discovers that a guest in the Penthouse and other men have been murdered. Soon after this, he meets Dirk Gently (Samuel Barnett), who is investigating the murder.  The two of them try to find out how the murder happened. Meanwhile, there's someone (Fiona Dourif) walking around determined to kill a guy named Dirk Gently.

My opinion

I think this is a very well made series! You really have to pay attention while watching. Otherwise you'll miss a lot! It's one of those series you have to hear and see everything. There's always something happening. I think the character of Dirk Gently is great. He's funny. clumsy and at times also panicky. This all doesn't make him a typical detective. But it does make him a great character.  The series has a great combination of humor, action and smart moves. It's interesting to watch, surprising and at the same time you can never lose focus! It's best classified as a comedy/ sci-fi series.  Dirk Gently investigates supernatural cases. There's never a dull moment!

Just 2 typical quotes from the show :): "I don't know anything, ever. It's really quite relaxing." (Dirk Gently's holistic detective agency) followed in the next scene by: "Look, he doesn't know anything. The amount of stuff that he doesn't know is stupefying. It would blow your mind."

The actors

I was familiar with 2 actors from the cast of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency: Elijah Wood and Fiona Dourif. I don't think Elijah Wood actually needs an introduction, but here we go: Most of you will know him as Frodo in the Lord of the Rings. But he played in many, many other movies. Just a few examples are: The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Hooligans, Avalon, the Good Son etc. His first movie credit was a small part in Back to the Future part II. I've seen Fiona Dourif in 2016 at Weekend of Hell. I know her mainly for Curse of Chucky. She will also star in Cult of Chucky. And yes, she's the daughter of Brad Dourif. I really like her in Dirk Gently's Holistic Dtective Agency! She plays an awesome role.

Dirk Gently is played by Samual Barnett. I think he's perfect for the role. The faces he makes. Haha I can't stop laughing. Like I said: Dirk is a combination of panicky, clumsy and funny. Optimistic. But also clueless. It's wonderful to see how he does his job, being how he is. You'll understand when you watch it haha. He works together with Farah Black, played by Jade Eshete. And she kicks ass!  She's awesome. She really the strong one. She's an important character. Other important characters are Amanda Broztman (Hannah Marks), Todd's sister. And Ken, played by Mpho Koaho, You'll mostly find him close to Bart (Fiona Dourif). You might know Mpho for Saw III and VI, MetaJets, Falling Skies and more!

These days, I've been watching shows that have a gory undertone replete with violence and deceit. While your reviewed series isn't preciselty that blood curdling, it may be worthy of being checked out.

I haven't completed watching this particular - I did start watching the first few episode but then never got around to complete it. Your review piqued my interest. Especially since it features some of my favorite actors of all times! Samual Barnett is a fresh face for me, but naturally I've seen many movies with our favorite "Hobbit star". It would be well worth it to see him in a completely different role (he was excellent in Wilfred, if you haven't seen it already, I can whole heartedly recommend it!)
