Tip of the week: Xena: The Warrior Princess

This week, I chose another series that's already a bit older. It's something I used to watch on television when I was younger. Later on, I bought all seasons on dvd and watched it again. When I watched it for the second time I really had to get used to it again. When I watched it on tv, I just watched now and then. So I had never seen the complete story. When I watched it on dvd, I had my doubts after seeing the first episode again. It felt a bit weird. And sometimes you need to leave things in the past haha. But I watched a couple more and I liked it again! I'm talking about: Xena: the Warrior Princess!

Xena is set in ancient Greece (But filmed in New Zealand). Xena used to be very violent. But she wants to redeem herself and decides to start fighting for the greater good. She travels together with her companion Gabrielle. Together they travel through Greece, fighting for good and helping their friends.

How about the actors?

Xena is played by Lucy Lawless. Her friend Gabrielle is portrayed by Renée O'Connor. Lucy Lawless has worked on way more than just Xena! Just a few things to mention: Ash vs Evil Dead, Salem, the Code, Spartacus: Blood and Sand and Tarzan. Renée O'Connor is also known for playing in Ark, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Battlestar Galactica. Some characters I really liked are Callisto (Played by Huston Leick), Joxer (Played by Tex Raimi) and Ares, God of War (Played by Kevin Smith).

Who will like this?

Did you like Hercules? Well, then you just might like to watch Xena as well! Xena: the Warrior Princess is an action, adventure / drama series. It's all about Xena trying to do good. You'll see fights and love stories.  And a Xena who is battling to stay good. Fighting her past and the things she has done. There's a nice balance between character development, action, fun and a bit of romance (But really, not that much).

How many seasons?

There were 6 seasons! (1995 - 2001).

My opinion

I think Xena is a really entertaining show. I love the setting in the ancient Greece. The surroundings and sword fights are great. And the I like the stories. Always something new happens. And I like the overlap with Hercules and the Gods that play a role in this series. I think Xena is great character. Though I've never been really fond of Gabrielle. Oh and I didn't mention her famous warcry yet. Do you know it? If not, seriously: look it up haha. At first this felt very weird in the series. Later on, it was just part of it.. Can't think of Xena without it!

This is an interesting post! You really gave us a good glimpse of the series and everything about the plot, the characters and the story. I just wish I can find something like this here in Manila

I don't even know who Xena is hahaha. But thanks for introducing her. I think she's one of the most cosplayed characters ever. Perhaps even more than Wonder Woman!

Xena is like ages ago! Is the lead character the same person who was also a WWF/WWE superstar? I know I watched some of the episodes and for the like of me, I can't remember anything now. It is like centuries ago already.

I remember Xena. I find her beautiful, only that shes big a lady for me. I associate her with Hercules. Too bad i wasnt able to watch even a single episode.

I've heard some of my classmates before mention Xena the Warrior Princess when I was young. However, I just stuck with my Disney channel and Cartoon Network. Now that I'm an adult, I still don't have any interest to watch it still. My favorite series is Game of Thrones and I'm so addicted to it. What I'll try this week though is Stranger Things.

It seems pretty interesting. When i was a kid, my older friend used to watch it and tell me everything about it. I completely forgot about it until now. I might start watching it now, more than 10 years after :)

I love this show! For someone who grew up in 90's Xena has been one of my favorite shows... Before GoT, there was once a Xena that features epic fight scenes.. I watched the reruns as well.. I am hoping that they could bring the series back either on TV or in big screen! That would be exciting

I used to watch this show too! Not all though, just whenever I can catch it on TV. I can fondly remember the shrill sound she makes when she attacks. Memories!

I used to watch this too when I was younger. :) I liked Xena because she's not the typical girl on tv. ;) But I also watch it every now and then only. I didn't know that it had many seasons.

This name "Xena, the Warrior Princess" is very familiar to me. I remember my brother who would usually watch it. I was still in elementary that time. The language it used was English and I was not that good in English yet that time. But now, I think I am going to love it. I love watching stories of a brave woman like Xena. I admire them and would be like them too.
