Movie review: Me before you

As you already might know: I often go to a Ladiesnight at the cinema. This time the movie was Me Before You! I was really looking forward to see this movie. I had seen that Emilia Clarke is in it. If her name doesn't ring a bell: She plays the role of Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones. One of my favourite characters on the show. I don't think I ever saw any of her other work. So I was excited to see Me Before You. Once we were in the cinema, I noticed that Sam Claflin plays the role of Will Traynor. I know Sam Claflin as Finnick in the Hunger Games. Love that: More reasons to be excited to see this movie.

Me Before You is about a girl (Lou) who loses her job. Her family doesn't have a lot of money, so she really needs to find a job soon. Which is tough. She tries but it's not easy to find something. At one moment she has a job interview for taking care of a paralyzed man (Will). Lou gets the job. She's hired by Will's parents. It's not exactly an easy start: Will used to be a banker and an adventurous guy. Now he's a cynical guy. Lou's kindness and happiness just irritates him. She's up for a real challenge. They grow closer. Then Lou finds out that Will wants to go to an assisted suicide clinic in Switzerland. From that moment on she does everything in her power to convince Will to stay alive.

I truly love the cast in this movie. Emilia Clarke is not just a convincing Khaleesi, she's awesome as Lou as well! Lou is funny and kind. You want her to be happy. Will's father looked so familiar when I was watching the movie. But somehow I couldn't place him. So I decided to look it up once I was home: It was Emilia Clarke's Game of Thrones collegue Charles Dance! In Game of Thrones he played the role of Tywin Lannister. That makes the cast even better for me :).

When I heard the plot of the movie, I was a bit afraid that it would be like Intouchables too much. But I didn't feel like that was the case.

In Intouchables, a man who's paralysed hires a young guy to take care of them. When the young guy (Driss) is coming in to apply, it's obvious he doesn't want the job. He's just obligated to apply. But he gets hired and it turns out great. The guys become friends and do lots of activities together. So when I read the plot of Me Before You, I saw an overlap. And I feared a bit that this movie just wanted to profit from the succes of Intouchables. But I was wrong. I really liked Me Before You and it might have some overlap in subject, the movies turns out very different.

Me Before You has it's own story with some unexpected turns. It's a romantic drama movie. And what I really love about it, is that it's not too predictable.  With the exception of a few obvious parts like Lou's boyfriend who's obviously not the right  guy for her. But these were small parts of the movie and it didn't bother me. It really managed to surprise me a few times and also made me smile.  I think the development of the relationship between Lou and Will is built up perfectly. Subtle enough, loved to see that. I was fascinated during the whole movie. It brings over the emotion perfectly. But if you cry easily at the movies: Bring your tissues!

At the end of the movie we also received a gooduebag again. It contained: Potato chips, a small bag of candies, a bottle of water, Aussie shampoo, Blistex, Lavender drink and more (Check out the photo below!).

That's why the male lead looks so familiar! I've been considering watching this movie but I was torn a bit because I didn't know if it was just the hype that made it sound a must watch. Based on your review though I will be making time to watch this soon.

I was curious to hear about this movie because of Emilia Clarke. Daenerys Targaryen is also one of my favorite characters. But I don't like romantic movies so much! I like mysteries and comedies. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the film though.

My fam just watched "Finding Dory" yesterday. I guess I need to take wifey to a separate movie date. Romantic movies is refreshing for couples

Me Before You is currently playing at our cinemas too, but I've never been the romantic-drama type. I love Emilia Clarke and the trailer made it look like a movie worth watching, but I still can't force myself to watch. This review is making me rethink a few things though, so thank you for shedding light on this. Can't find "actual" reviews that don't use overly flowery words.

Since I resigned from work, its very seldom that I watch movies in cinemas. And I would very much want to see Me before you because of Finnick. Ihihi. Seems a pretty interesting movie, more like Julia Robert's Dying Young.
