It's June already and time to look back on the movies we watched in May! So many!!!

What did you watch?

Birds of Prey

Year: 2020

Genre: Action, crime

IMDB score: 6,2

My score: 7

Remark: My first movie of the month May! Birds of Prey had been on my watch list for a while already. I wanted to watch it in the cinema , but I missed it. Ever since I've been waiting for the opportunity to watch it. Now I saw the movie on Pathe Thuis and I decided to finally watch this movie about Harley Quinn!

The Fisher King

IMDB score: 7,5

My score: 7,5

Remark: In April, I asked on Instagram for some recommendations for Robin Williams movies. After that post, I also went looking myself for some new DVDs. Based on the recommendations/ search I bought the Birdcage (Which I watched in April) and the Fisher King. I really loved watching this movie and I have no idea why I hadn't heard of this one before!

In the Fisher King, Robin Williams plays a plays Parry, a homeless man who used to be a history teacher. One day, he saves a former radio DJ from an attack. Parry has visions of a knight on a horse. In exchange for saving the former DJ, he asks him to help him look for the Holy Grail.

Rollercoaster

Year: 1977

Genre: Action, crime

IMDB score: 6,3

My score: 7,5

Remark: While I was looking for the DVD of the Fisher King, I also bumped into Rollercoaster. I had never heard of this movie, but the plot sounded interesting.

The movie is about a guy who blackmails American Amusement Parks. He threatens to sabotage their rollercoasters if they don't pay him a lot of money.

I thought this was a great movie. The acting was amazing and the story was very well built. There was a lot of tension and the storyline wasn't predictable. I'm happy I found this movie!

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

Year: 2019

Genre: Biography, drama

IMDB score: 7,3

My score: 7,5

Remark: I had seen a lot about this movie on Instagram. It made me curious and I always want to see a Tom Hanks movie! I was waiting to see this movie, I hadn't seen it in the cinema and couldn't find it on DVD yet. And now I saw I could rent the movie on Pathe Thuis. So I did.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is about journalist Lloyd Vogel who's doing an interview with Fred Rogers. It's the start of a life long friendship.

I thought it was a nice movie, Tom Hanks was absolutely great, as always. And I loved the story development.

Asphalt Jungle

Year: 1950

Genre: Crime, drama

IMDB score: 7,9

My score: 7

Remark: A movie from a Film Noir DVD collection I have. It's the first one of the DVD box that I watched. Asphalt Jungle is about a heist that goes as planned. But someone is planning a double cross...

A Few Good Men

Year: 1950

Genre: Drama, thriller

IMDB score: 7,7

My score: 8

Remark: It's so strange that I hadn't seen this movie before! I really liked it. A Few Good Men has an awesome cast. Just to give a few names: Jack Nicholson, Demi Moore, Tom Cruise, Kevin Bacon.  In this movie, military lawyer Lt. Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise) defends two marines who are accused of murder.

I think this is a great movie. the story is awesome and like I said, the cast is great! Really a classic and must see.

Symbol

Year: 2009

Genre: Comedy, fantasy

IMDB score: 7,1

My score: 3

Remark: When I saw this movie on Vitamine Cineville, I was so enthusiastic! This sounded like a super weird movie and I love that. Symbol is about a man who wakes up in a room with only buttons. Lots and lots of buttons. He just needs to find out, what every button does. So he starts pushing buttons.

I really liked the idea. And the start of the movie was awesome. Half way, there was a change though and that was not my cup of tea. All in all, I didn't really enjoy the complete story. I had expected it to be really different.

Mandingo

Year: 1975

Genre: Drama, history

IMDB score: 6,3

My score: 7

Remark: A movie I had in the collection for a while already, but hadn't watched yet. Mandigo is about Warren Maxwell, a slaveowner in the 19th century who trains his slave to be champions in street fights.

Tesis

Year: 1996

Genre: Horror, mystery

IMDB score: 7,4

My score: 8

Remark: This was a movie marathon Saturday movie (the first of the day). In Tesis, Angela is writing a thesis about violence in videos. During her research, she finds a video where a girl is tortured to death. This girl was a student at the same faculty as she's studying. I thought this was a great movie! Great story, well written & great actors.

All About Eve

Year: 1950

Genre: Drama

IMDB score: 8,1

My score: 8

Remark: Oh yeah! Another Bette Davis movie. Yeah, ever since I watched What Ever Happened to Baby Jane, I can't stop watching Bette Davis movies! And All About Eve has been 'hiding' on the movie shelves. And it was about time to watch this movie! (I almost bought it again on DVD, because I didn't realize I already owned it).

In All About Eve, Bette Davis plays actress Margo Channing. Eve Harrington (played by Anne Baxter) is a huge fan of Margo and and wants nothing else than to be just as successful.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space

Year: 1988

Genre: Horror, comedy

IMDB score: 6,2

My score: 7

Remark: A didn't know what to expect from this movie, but I really liked it! It's about Aliens, who look like clowns, coming to a town and terrorize it. I love how the clown looks and how colorful the movie is. I really enjoyed watching this one. Different and entertaining!

Socrate

Year: 1971

Genre: Biography, history

IMDB score: 7,2

My score: 8

Remark: A move about philospher Socrates.  I really love philosophy ( I studied Arts & Social Sciences). And I really like reading about Socrates and Plato. I got this movie for my birthday and I didn't even know this movie existed. I really liked watching it. It's about the death of Socrates and the accusations that lead up to that. I thought it was a great movie and it was nice to see the story of Socrates instead of just reading about his ideas and philosophy.

Marathon

Year: 2005

Genre: Biography, drama

IMDB score: 7,7

My score: 7

Remark: This is a movie I have in the collection almost a year now. It's a great edition including for example a towel. Just because of the DVD edition I already like it haha. Now it was time to watch the movie too. Marathon is about Cho-won, an autistic boy who discovers he has a huge talent for running. he loves to run. And his mom is helping him to run marathons.

Swallow

Year: 2019

Genre: Drama, thriller

IMDB score: 6,4

My score: 7,5

Remark: Another movie that I watched on Vitamine Cineville! I read about it and was really excited to see it. It's about a woman who lives together with her boyfriend. She's a housewife and find out that she's pregnant. But she feels quite unhappy. feeling unhappy, she starts eating stuff she shouldn't. (Non edible things). It's starting to be an obsession for her.

I thought this was quite an interesting movie. I liked how the story was written and how you can feel for both Hunter (the woman), but also see a bit how boyfriend feels as well. I think it's a quite original story line with great characters.

Dolores Claiborne

Year: 1995

Genre: Crime, drama

IMDB score: 7,4

My score: 7,5

Remark: A movie with Kathy Bates! I'm a huge fan of the movie Misery (It's my favorite movie). And I am always excited to see another movie starring Kathy Bates in a huge role. In Dolores Claiborne, she plays woman who gets arrested for murder on an elderly woman she worked for as a maid. Her daughter travels to see her, but their bound isn't that good.

The movie is really about the bound between mother and daughter and the question whether Dolores is guilty or not. I really liked the movie. Great actors, characters and story. The daughter is played by Jennifer Jason Leigh who plays it really great too. I enjoyed watching this one!

Die Wand (The Wall)

Year: 2012

Genre: Drama, fantasy

IMDB score: 6,8

My score: 6

Remark: I bought the DVD of Die Wand (The Wall) this month. I was just looking for some new movies to watch and found this one. The plot sounded very interesting to me. Die Wand is about a woman who suddenly bumps into an invisible wall. She finds herself surrounded by the wall, cut off from all human contact. Together with her dog, she lives within the invisible walls.

I was really interested when I read the plot. Such an original story! I was really curious to see what they would do with the story. And I have to say I was a bit disappointed by that. I was ready to be surprised, but eventually I wasn't. I think the movie could have done way more with the story than it did. But that's just my take on it!

Cooties

Year: 2014

Genre: Action, comedy

IMDB score: 5,7

My score: 7

Remark: We have met Elijah Wood already 3 times and that has definitely made me look up more Elijah Wood movies. I've recently seen quite a few. For example Maniac and Come to Daddy. This month, I received the DVD of Cooties for my birthday (whoop whoop!). Another Elijah Wood movie!

In Cooties, Elijah Wood plays a substitute teacher on an elementary school. On his first day, a virus spreads and the children go crazy. The teachers need to fight for their lives.

The Spirit of the Beehive

Year: 1973

Genre: Drama, fantasy

IMDB score: 7,9

My score: 7

Remark: One of the movies I watched on a Saturday movie marathon! I had no idea what to expect, but I was happily surprised. In the Spirit of the Beehive, 2 little sisters watch the movie Frankenstein. The movie triggers one of the girls. She can't let go and keeps thinking of the movie. Slowly she gets drawn into her own fantasy world.

I liked this movie, I knew nothing about it and it was great to see it. The little girl Ana seemed very familiar to me but I didn't know why. When I looked on Imdb I knew: She also played a role in Tesis (she was quite a bit older there. There's a 23 years difference), a movie I also watched this month!

The Anniversary

Year: 1968

Genre: Drama, comedy

IMDB score: 7

My score: 8

Remark: Whoop whoop! Yes, I watched another Bette Davis movie, (And many more will follow hahaha). In this movie, Bette Davis plays a mother who is celebrating her anniversary to her late husband. Her sons come by to visit. And she uses to opportunity to control them as much as possible and have a big influence on her life. It doesn't really seem like a happy cozy anniversary!

I got this DVD for my birthday and I was very happy see it. A great movie which definitely surprises and amazes. I've never seen an anniversary like this!

Carnage

Year: 2011

Genre: Drama, comedy

IMDB score: 7,2

My score: 7,5

Remark: I bought this movie recently in a second hand shop. I think Christopher Waltz is an amazing actor and when I saw he played in this movie I knew I wanted to try it. This movie has a great cast. It also stars Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet and John C. Reilly.

The movie is about 2 pairs of parents. There was an incident between their sons: One hit the other. The come together to discuss it and solve the matter. But the more time they spend together, the more complex it seems to solve this in a decent way.

Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Year: 1966

Genre: Drama

IMDB score: 8

My score: 7,5

Remark: I watched this movie on the same day as Carnage and the Anniversay. (And I watched some more). But, can you see a theme here haha? Family/ friends meetings that get quite out of hand haha.

In Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf we 2 couples spending an evening together. The older couple is fighting a lot, which makes the whole situation uncomfortable for the other couple.

Uncle Sam

Year: 1996

Genre: Comedy, horror

IMDB score: 4,5

My score: 7

Remark: Another movie I watched on a movie marathon Saturday. Well, maybe this fits the Family/ friends meetings that get out of hand also a bit haha. In this movie, Samual Harper, Uncle Sam, rises from the dead to take revenge and kill people in his town.

The Game

Year: 1997

Genre: Action, drama

IMDB score: 7,8

My score: 7,5

Remark: A movie starring Sean Penn and Michael Douglas! I think this movie was the DVD shelves for a while already. And now it was about time to watch it! A nice movie, definitely worth a watch!

Liv

Another crazy month has gone by and I watched a lot of series in May. I finally finished "Lucifer", I binged two seasons of "Dead to Me" and I've been watching "Hollywood" and "Suits". But I also watched movies and while my list is not as extended as Carola's list, I did watch some very cool movies in May...

Midway

Year: 2019

Genre: Action/Adventure

IMDB score: 6,7

My score: 7

Remark: Ever since I saw the trailer for this one, I wanted to see it. I actually really wanted to watch it in the cinema, but somehow that didn't happen. The movie tells the story of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 and the following battle of Midway in June 1942. The special effects are amazing and the acting is also solid. There is a small role for Alexander Ludwig (picture on the left) as Roy Pearce.

Tag

Year: 2018

Genre: Comedy

IMDB score: 6,5

My score: 7

Remark: I really liked this movie about a group of friends that have been playing an annual game of Tag for over 30 years.

Disturbing the Peace

Year: 2020

Genre: Action

IMDB score: 3,1

My score: 3

Remark: First of all I would like to say that I think Guy Pearce is a great actor. He was brilliant in "Memento"  and "L.A. Confidential" to name a few. But "Disturbing the Peace" was not my cup of tea and even Guy Pearce couldn't change my mind about it.

Clue

Year: 1985

Genre: Comedy/Crime

IMDB score: 7,3

My score: 7,8

Remark: Not only do I love the game of Clue, but I also love the movie "Clue". When six guests are invited to a dinner party in a big mansion, it soon turns out that they are not there for the fun of it. Then the host gets killed and together they have to find out who did it. And in the meantime, the bodies keep piling up. One of the main characters is played by the amazing Christopher LLoyd.

Maverick

Year: 1994

Genre: Action/Adventure/Comedy

IMDB score: 7

My score: 8,5

Remark: I can watch this movie over and over again. I love everything about it. The movie is based on the TV series from the late 50s. Brett Maverick is an excellent poker player and he is on his way to the biggest tournament there is. The only thing is that he doesn't have all the money to enter yet and things do not exactly go his way.

48 Hrs.

A Beautiful Day in the Neigborhood

Year: 2019

Genre: Biography/Drama

IMDB score: 7,3

My score: 8

Remark: Tom Hanks is one of my favorite actors, so when I read about this one I had to watch it. Hanks is amazing as always. He plays the role of Fred Rogers, the host of a popular long running children's TV show "Mr. Rogers' Neigborhood". The movie revolves around the real life friendship between Rogers and the embittered journalist Tom Junod (in the movie he is called Lloyd Vogel).

Hellriser

Remark: Indie UK horror movie about a series of occult murders and the search for the one that is committing them.

Red Heat

Year: 1988

Genre: Action/Comedy

IMDB score: 6,1

My score: 6,5

Remark: I love to watch these kind of 80s movies, but I had actually never seen this one! Belushi is solid as always and Schwarzenegger is very convincing as a though as nails Sovjet policeman. We also watched the extras on the DVD containing a short, but very insightful documentary about Schwarzenegger's start in Hollywood.

The Bucket List

Year: 2007

Genre: Comedy/Drama

IMDB score: 7,4

My score: 8

Remark: I have watched this one multiple times and it never gets old. Freeman and Nicholson are amazing in it.
